The panel type, roof complexity, trim fabrication, tear-off, deck work and material access affect the project. An architectural-shingle planning rate cannot be used as a metal price.

A metal roof is a panel system with particular seams, fasteners and transitions. The useful comparison is how those details fit your roof, along with the appearance and installed cost.

| System | Connections and owner choices |
|---|---|
| Standing seam | Raised seams join panels, with the selected panel system determining attachment and movement details. Penetrations and transitions need compatible flashing. |
| Exposed-fastener panels | Fasteners pass through the panel and use sealing washers. Washer condition, attachment and movement remain maintenance considerations. |
| Metal shingles or tiles | Smaller formed pieces can create a familiar profile. Their fastening and interlocking details differ from long panels and from asphalt. |
Panel length, thermal movement, valley layout and the pitch accepted by the selected system affect the design. Changing to metal also changes how rain and snow leave the roof. Snow retention, gutter layout and entrances need to be considered where sliding snow creates an exposure. Existing wood, underlayment and transitions still need to support the new covering.

Loose trim, a deteriorated sealing washer and a failed penetration call for different work. Compatible metals and sealants matter; coating over a failed connection does not rebuild it.
