Wall and chimney flashing
Step flashing works with individual shingle courses. Counterflashing protects the upper edge at masonry. We examine both the exposed metal and how it connects below the covering.

Roof flashing carries rain across the joints where a covering meets a wall, chimney, vent or roof edge. When that connection separates, new shingles alone will not close the water path.

A boot has a base integrated into the roofing and a collar around the pipe. A split collar and a loose base are different defects, and both connections need to remain sound.
Valleys carry runoff from adjoining slopes, while drip edges direct it away from the deck. Repairs have to preserve the downhill laps and outlet path.
Paint-on sealant can hide an opening without restoring the layers beneath it. A lasting detail depends on sound adjoining covering, correctly lapped metal or membrane, and secure attachment to the right substrate.
Opening the joint can reveal deteriorated sheathing or a wall issue that widens the job. The condition of shingles around the flashing determines whether they can be lifted and reused or whether a larger area needs replacement.

The type of roof opening, height, slope and amount of covering that must be removed affect the repair. Chimneys, intersecting walls and difficult access involve more work than a readily accessible boot. A free inspection helps define the joint and the layers involved.
